- (en) In light of the surrealistic paradox of enunciation, this article analyzes the discursive effects of Paul Nougé’s play Le Dessous des cartes which was presented in 1927 at a concert, shortly before the creation of Brussels’ surrealistic group. The study reveals a subtle weaving of references about the theatrical genre, particularly a rewriting which denounces modernist theatre’s naive ambitions. By targeting Jean Cocteau’s Les mariés de la tour Eiffel, Nougé shows that language, taken in its stereotypical manifestations, oppresses thought more than it frees the imagination.
