The entry of Britain in the European Economic Community (E.E.C.) raises many important questions for the economist. One of these concerns the consequences of entry for competition: what is the European trend of concentration, what is the relative performance of Continental and British firms, who is challenging whom? The present paper is addressed to one specific aspect of these broad problems, that is a comparison of the top 100 British and EEC industrial corporations. The first part compares the aggregate concentration, size and stability of these firms, while the regression analysis in the second part ascribes the observed differences in the profit and growth rates to differences in nationality, size or industry.
