- Huge toy-shaped amusement arcades, pachinko parlors are like “dream boxes” sitting in the countryside as well as urban center. Their bright signs and vivid referents compose a candid but complex decoration that can stimulate designers to understand and use decoration to express architectural messages. When decoration is used as a communicative medium, referents and their representations by signs become crucially important and great care has to be taken in their choice. Used as architectural components, “signifiants” and “signifiés” often have to be adapted in order to conform to the buildings functional context. From definitions brought out by Norberg-Schulz, the existence of relationships between all the components of an architectural decoration can be established. This takes the form of a network. Furthermore, understanding of significance and form can be extended. Networks are not only linearly constituted (linking referents only or signs only), also complexly. So stated, the network consists of the sum of the relationships which link all the elements of decoration, to give it usually coherence and legibility.
