- Abstract
- The purpose of this article is to analyze the transnational human rights defense network that has come into being based on Colombian civil resistance communities. Following on the work of Keck and Sikkink entitled Activists Beyond Borders, the author aims to address the following questions: Why and how did this transnational human rights defense network come about? How does it work? And what are the conditions of its effectiveness? By responding to these questions, the goal is to serve two purposes: one empirical and the other theoretical. Regarding the former, the idea is to provide certain key approaches to the network’s conditions of effectiveness and the resulting challenges facing human rights activists. Regarding the latter, the aim is to discuss the validity of the theoretical framework developed by Keck and Sikkink when applying it to the Colombian case, which involves armed conflict and a multiplicity of actors responsible for human rights violations.
