Abstract
The purpose of this work was to find out the main causes of the premature failure of certain dual ferritic-martensitic steels. In order to reveal the principal factors responsible for this shortcoming, certain of the dual steels were deformed deliberately by cold-rolling and not by traction. It was necessary during the deformation of the sheet to examine continuously a clean and virgin surface and not a dirty one which has been leveled down by the rollers of the mill. An `artefact' was used and instead of the examination of the rolling plane surface, the side surfaces were examined, which were-before rolling-polished and slightly etched to reveal both phases. In this way, it was found that the deformation of these two-phase steels is excessively heterogeneous. This heterogeneity is entirely or principally due to the hard martensite crystals which act as very efficient obstacles to impede the flow of the ductile ferrite. However, the main interest was to detect the mechanisms of the microcrack formation and their propagation through the material.
