(en) The merits and the drawbacks of the different regulatory techniques regarding the control of emissions from light vehicles are discussed in this chapter. We put our finger on the following paradox: although car emission standards have been gradually tightened, ambient air quality in a number of cities has not really improved. Moreover, in the aftermath of ‘dieselgate’, the vehicle-approval framework EU legislation has been overhauled with a view to enhancing better enforcement of the control of the emissions.
