The contracting muscle produces mechanical work and releases heat. The associate chemical reactions are briefly detailed. Their speed is closely governed by the mechanical effort required from the muscle : it increases if the muscle produces an effort on the outside world, while it decreases if the muscle receives such effort (during forced stretching). The muscle, however, is not a machine able to transform reversibly chemical energy into mechanical energy. The ba¬lance between mobilized chemical energy and mechanical (and thermal) energy released by the contracting muscle is not always observed. At the beginning of a tetanus or during prolonged tetanus, the production of heat exceeds that expected from concomitant chemical reactions. We consequently draw the conclusion, that one (or several) processes not yet identi¬fied are at work.
