- Abstract
- Gypsonictops dormaalensis Quinet, 1964, originally described from an single P4/, is attributed to the genus Leptacodon. The species L. dormaalensis is redescribed on the basis of mandible fragments and isolated cheek teeth from the Upper Landenian of Dormaal (Belgium). Its age is close to the Paleocene-Eocene boundary. The comparison of the Belgian Leptacodon with the other species of the genus shows that it is closely related to the type-species L. tener Matthew & Granger, 1921 and appears with the latter and L. rosei Gingerich, 1987 to possess the most primitive morphologic characters of the nyctitheriids. The phylogeny of the genus Leptacodon is also discussed and the genus Plagioctenodon Bown, 1979 is considered synonymous with the genus Leptacodon.
