Abstract
(en) A good story is above all a good plot. To “intrigue” the reader by creating a narrative tension, three devices are available to the storyteller: suspense, curiosity and surprise. This article begins by briefly discussing how these three mechanisms work. It then illustrates their implementation by analyzing the episode of Jacob’s arrival at Laban’s home and his marriage with his uncle’s daughters. It highlights the techniques that are used to create tension: games on temporality, point of view, modes of narration, knowledge distilled to the reader, repetitions, etc.
