Abstract
Beet soil-borne virus (BSBV) is a pomovirus (family Virgaviridae) infecting sugar beet. It is often found along with Beet virus Q (BVQ) and Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV), the causal agent of rhizomania, a major constraint for sugar beet production. These three viruses are transmitted by Polymyxa betae, an obligate biotrophic root endoparasite protist, belonging to the order Plasmodiophorida, included in the Rhizaria supergroup (Keskin, 1964). In recent years, BNYVV and pomoviruses were often co-detected in the same roots, sometimes in association to Rz1 resistance breaking events in France and Belgium. However, little is known about how these viruses interact as well as about the impact of BSBV and BVQ in rhizomania disease. Moreover, very few methods based on interference with Polymyxa transmission have been proposed unlike for some viruses vectored by arthropods. The main reason is that the biology of Polymyxa spp. remains poorly studied, especially their interactions with viruses (Bragard et al., 2013).
