Abstract
Broadband characterization of the propagation channel requires an investigation on physical phenomena which are very often neglected as, in particular, dispersion, i.e. a significant frequency dependence of some parameters of the link. The paper reviews the various reasons for frequency dependence on a satellite-Earth channel, mainly water vapor, liquid water, and time-dependent inhomogeneities. The 10-100 GHz band is investigated, with an emphasis on the 20-30 GHz frequency band. Atmospheric turbulence is especially looked at: it yields fluctuations of the refractive index, leading to amplitude, phase, and angle-of-arrival variations on the signal received from a satellite. Results are presented, based on a model where the parameters of the link and of the inhomogeneities (frequency, dielectric constant, antenna diameter, inhomogeneity size and altitude) can be varied. The time-variant transfer function of the link is obtained. It may vary very much as a function of frequency, yielding group delays of the order of 10 nanoseconds in some circumstances.
