- The Islamic vicious hermeneutic circle occurs when Islamic tradition is used to explain itself. Scientific critique, which was used in the 19th century by European scholars of Islamic studies, suggested various solutions to escape this circle through methods of philology and history (already applied in the history of religions and biblical studies). Scientific critique (as opposed to ideological critique represented by the post-colonial theory) continues to provide solutions for the Islamic vicious hermeneutic circle. In this chapter, I discuss two recent examples from France and Belgium: Jacqueline Chabbi in France drawing on historical anthropology to read the Quranic vocabulary in light of the Arabian tribal imaginary while in Belgium Mehdi Azaiez has recourse to biblical material to index Quranic polemics in the Jewish-Christian religious history.
