Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major human pathogen. The pneumococcus is the leading cause of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in many countries, including Belgium. CAP is a frequent disease but also a frequent cause of death. Resistance to antibiotics of the pneumococcus has increased worldwide during the last decades. Belgian guidelines for CAP recommend amoxicillin as the first choice antibiotic, or, as an alternative a cephalosporin or a fluoroquinolone. We assessed the epidemiology of antibiotics resistance in a belgian population of S. pneumoniae by testing currently used antibiotics, but also molecules of potential use (in development). We also investigated a particular mechanism of resistance, active efflux, mainly to fluoroquinolones (but also macrolides).
