Abstract
Obesity and type 2 diabetes represent a major public health problem and the gut microbiota is a new therapeutic target. We have isolated a new bacterium called Dysosmobacter welbionis J115T whose abundance is reduced in subjects suffering from obesity and diabetes. In mice, D. welbionis J115T limits body weight gain and improves high-fat diet-induced diabetes. These effects are associated with an increase in the activity of brown adipose tissue. Using lipidomic approaches, we found that D. welbionis J115T produced bioactive lipids (in vitro) and altered the lipid profile of key tissues. We observed that patients treated with metformin had more D. welbionis J115T in the intestine and that people with more D. welbionis J115T before the start of a prebiotic treatment responded better to it. Finally, D. welbionis J115T is more active than metformin in improving glucose tolerance in mice. These results suggest that D. welbionis J115T is a potential next-generation beneficial bacterium.
