- (en) Jijé the Satirical Cartoonist. The satirical vein in Jijé’s artwork (Joseph Gillain, 1914-1980) is not the major aspect of his wide-ranging artistic activity. Over a career spanning half a century, the satirical drawing, however, was for him an early and continuous practice, both autonomous, through cartoon and caricature, and gradually incorporated into his realistic serial comics. In the 1960s and 1970s, these comics became more permeable to satirical processes (such as caricature and burlesque skits), at a time when the artist was developing a humorous schematic style, intended for occasional work and advertising comics. This paper traces this satirical vein, apart from comics, over half a century.
