- Abstract
- (en) This dissertation aims to improve our understanding of the effects of trade protection on firm behavior. The first chapter overviews the main literature on antidumping protection and puts forth the main contributions of this doctoral thesis. Chapters two and three shed new light on the signaling effects of antidumping protection. These chapters endeavor to propose the idea that in a world with asymmetric information, governments use antidumping as a signaling device to increase the benefit of protection for their domestic producers. This leads antidumping policy to have important adverse effects on trade flows and welfare. In chapter four, co-authored with Wouter Vergote, we study the effects of an import tariff and consider antidumping action when firms compete with two strategic variables, namely a price and non-price instrument. We conclude that, no matter whether trade restriction is placed on the non-price instrument or on the good itself, the foreign firm, who pays the duty, will always prefer to increase its use of its pricing tool, which can lead the foreign firm to decrease its final goods price.
