Abstract
(en) The development of the sub-Saharan African large cities peripheries is marked by sprawl, excess and lack of effective public policies. The forced modernization of African societies is largely responsible for this situation but there are other related factors, including the production and appropriation of space to turn it into more homogeneous territories from a functional point of view, and more fragmented sociologically speaking, as a kind of emerging transitional urban society between yesterday and today. For different stakeholders, the African city becomes both areas for confrontation and areas for action: the oversprawling allows surviving and daily life styles. In the lack of any urban public governance between these two types of territories, different actors actions lights up without artifacts and reveal opposing processes enhancing or completing each other in producing urban space. Through space-related popular practices in Kinshasa periphery, we explore and propose, in a context marked by the state decline, a means of interpreting hegermonic socio-spatial mechanisms; we identify the social and cultural dynamics at work in N’djili (a Kinshasa local district) perceived as away from all administrative and commercial facilities, offset by more than a persisting “physical rupture” and which now proves unsettling for the stakeholders holding a popular and original representation of their urbanity. The study, beyond existing interdisciplinary studies in urban sociology, history, urban geography and anthropology of development that it mobilizes to “read the periphery of Kinshasa”, highlights the phenomenon extent and nature in the case of N'djili local district.
