Abstract
Isolated frog sartorius muscles were tetanically stimulated (25 alternating condenser discharges pes second) in oxygenated Ringer’s solution buffered at 7.3pH by bicarbonate-CO2 at 18° for 2-3 sec. Contractions were either at a fixed length, i.e., isometric, or shortening against a weight which had been hanged on resting muscle, i.e. isotonic contraction with no afterload. To minimize fatigue, isometric contractions alternated with isotonic ones in a “mirror design”. Muscle force was measured by strain gauges and muscle length was measured by a photoelectric method (Hill, 1950). Both signals were recorded on a Philips millivoltmeter. Muscle in isotonic contraction shortens to a final definite length which is shorter when the load is lighter. The isotonic load-length diagram is obtained by plotting the load against the final length. The isometric force-length diagram is obtained by plotting the isometric force against the length. The two diagrams do not coincide, the isometric force being always higher than the corresponding load lifted by the muscle to that length. This confirm the results of Buchthal (1942).
