- - This is a work in progress - The purpose of this paper is to present some empirical evidences about frontline officers’ ways of coping during public service delivery in probation services in Belgium. Taking stock of the existing literature about coping mechanisms, I propose a set of simple hypotheses regarding the nature and conditions behind probation officers’ behavioral efforts when interacting with their supervisees. I then carried a thematic analysis on 30 semi-directed interviews with Belgian French-speaking probation officers (10 currently included in the paper). The results are discussed using Tummers et al.'s (2015) construct about coping during public service delivery. This construct provides a systematic way to identify distinctive ‘families of coping’ which characterize probation officers’ behaviors towards their supervisees in terms of coping ‘towards’; ‘away’ or ‘against’ their supervisees during public service delivery.
