Contrary to experiments which control various aspects of sociocognitive conflict but do not describe the process of conflict in detail, the present study, conducted with 5 to 7-year-old children, measures different facets of intraindividual cognitive conflict, interindividual sociocognitive conflict and related variables. Different process variables were derived from a microgenetic analysis of video-recordings referring to two learning sessions in which three children of different cognitive levels interacted in order to solve a number conservation problem. The analysis combined systematic observation and content analysis in a fine-grained coding frame considering temporal relations between the observed actions. The process variables derived from the analysis of the video-recordings were considered in relation to the outcome of the learning sessions, measured by pre- to posttest change. Intraindividual conflict and interindividual sociocognitive conflict and related variables were correlated with the outcome, but results varied largely as a function of the children's pretest level.
