TravelKit is a longitudinal research platform developed to investigate second-language speaking through collaborative virtual reality (VR) game-based language learning. Originally conceived within the doctoral research of Bailing He at UCLouvain, the platform combines a purpose-built pedagogical environment with a standardised experimental protocol, shared research instruments, multimodal data collection, transcription and annotation workflows, and a structured longitudinal dataset. Since its initial development, TravelKit has evolved into a shared research infrastructure supporting multiple interconnected doctoral and master’s projects addressing complementary aspects of second-language learning.
This report documents the TravelKit research platform and establishes the first comprehensive methodological reference for its use. It describes the conceptual and pedagogical foundations of the platform, the design and implementation of the VR environment, the longitudinal experimental protocol, the shared questionnaire and interview framework, the story-retelling task, transcription and annotation procedures, dataset organisation, and project governance. Particular attention is given to distinguishing the shared research infrastructure from thesis-specific scientific contributions, thereby providing a transparent framework for attribution, reuse, and collaboration across multiple research projects.
Rather than reporting empirical findings, this document serves as the official methodological and infrastructural reference for the TravelKit research programme. It is intended to support transparency, reproducibility, and consistent attribution in future master’s theses, doctoral dissertations, publications, conference presentations, and other scholarly outputs that make use of the TravelKit platform or its shared resources.
