- Abstract
- For decades, researchers have focused on the influence of religion on the attitudes and behaviors of individuals. In this context, researchers have examined the relationship between religion and sexual attitudes and behaviors. Overall, the studies indicate that the association between these two realities is rather negative. However, most of them have been conducted in the United States in a context that values religion. Are the results of these studies therefore generalizable to other secular contexts? Other than Christians? In addition, previous research has shown little interest in understanding the relationship between religion and sexuality. Through eight studies, we have examined this complex relationship and demonstrated that it must be considered bidirectionally and, at least in part, indirectly. Indeed, we showed on the one hand that sexuality could affect religion and on the other hand, that psychological mechanisms such as moral emotions, or emotional and cognitive predispositions could explain the inhibition of sexuality by religion. Because of its roots in different fields of psychology, we believe that this thesis contributes significantly to research in the psychology of religion and the psychology of sexuality.
