- Phronesis is a key concept in Aristotle’s Ethics. But how are we supposed to understand the phronimos specifi c ability in relation to action? According to Aristotle the phronimos is a good judge of what to do here and now; he deliberates and judges well, and he evaluates what is to be done by referring not only to the particular case at stake but also to universal perspectives. Hence the question: what is the relationship between the particular case and the universal if it differs from the relationship between the particular and the universal in a mathematical deduction? According the hypothesis followed in this article, the universal which is involved here is note an axiom but rather a unique ideal built by the imagination on the basis of a variety of single experiences. Such a universal is comparable to the ideal of beauty described by Kant in his third Critique.
