- (en) In a socio-political context where the question of the institutionalisation of a Citizen Service in Belgium is increasingly being raised, following the example of large-scale programs established in other European countries, the aim of this research report is to present the results of a study focused on the experience of volunteers who participated in the Citizen Service program currently implemented by the Platform for Citizen Service. This experimental program, aimed at young adults aged 18 to 25, has been growing steadily over the past few years and is intended to serve as a model for the institutionalisation that the Platform for Citizen Service is hoping for. Our study aims to address the lack of an independent and in-depth sociological study of the experience of volunteers who join this program. It is based on a comprehensive method that includes retrospective interviews with former volunteers (n=25), comprehensive interviews with those responsible for the program and its implementation (n=10), and observation sessions (n=14). The results focus on what leads young adults to engage in a Citizen Service, how they experience their participation in this program and their experiences after the Citizen Service. Finally, this report ends with a discussion aimed at clarifying the position of the Citizen Service in relation to expressive and civic logics on the one hand and employment-related logics on the other.
