- Abstract
- This article provides an overview of current knowledge regarding the nature of sexually explicit materials and the effects of exposure to such material. It reviews both functional and structural definitions of pornography, illustrates the cultural and historical pervasiveness of sexual representations, and reviews research concerning the content of contemporary sexually explicit materials. Patterns of pornography use are considered, and a review of evidence that exposure to sexually explicit materials can influence the way people think, feel evaluate, and behave is provided.
