Abstract
(en) This chapter forms the introduction to the third and last part of the volume and focuses, at the macro-scale, on settlement patterns, regional variations, but also cultural processes taking place in the wider Eastern Mediterranean. It addresses the types of data existing in the Minoan built environment, highlighting the constraints they impose and opportunities they open, how they can be approached in terms of theory and methods, the type of research question that can be addressed, how this particular scale can be understood in relation to the micro- and meso-scales and why it is useful to do so, while contextualizing the individual chapters comprising the second part of the volume.
