Abstract
(en) [The Body in Chronic Illness: Options for Personalized Care That Supports Patient Empowerment Findings from a Collaborative Research Project in the Brussels-Capital Region] Participate Brussels is a case study conducted in the Brussels region, funded from 2018 to 2021. At the outset of the project, multiple stakeholders acknowledged that the healthcare system could better meet patients’ needs and enhance professionals’ satisfaction with their practices. Patients, professionals, and researchers co-designed and tested innovative solutions to support care personalization in Brussels. The data collection and analysis processes were iterative and included three interconnected components: (i) field research through in-depth interviews with patients (n=26) as well as healthcare and social care professionals (n=47); (ii) co-creation seminars to collectively analyze the data and discuss emerging empirical and theoretical insights; and (iii) development, experimentation, and dissemination of 11 co-constructed action proposals. Among these proposals, this article focuses on the concept of fostering dialogue around bodily sensations and fatigue in illness. This outcome illustrates the evolution, articulation, and enrichment of several themes throughout the research process, through ongoing dialogue among patients, professionals, and researchers.
