Abstract
The rise of generative AI has sparked extensive literature on journalism ethics (Porlezza, 2023; Cools & Koliska, 2024). However, few works (Carillon, 2024; Van den Buck & Moe, 2018; Sørensen, 2020) have analyzed PSM’s integration of core values into personalization systems. Adopting a comparative perspective, this ongoing research examines (1) how PSM embed public service values into the design and implementation of personalization systems; (2) these values’ influence on the design and development of personalization systems, and (3) governance mechanisms ensuring adherence to these values. We conducted semi-structured interviews with project leaders in six European PSMs: French—and Flemish-speaking Belgium, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, and Italian-speaking Switzerland. Using Dörr & Hollnbuchner’s (2017) framework, we investigate how responsible AI — an umbrella term covering ethical concerns as diversity (Jones et al., 2023), transparency and accountability (Porlezza & Schapals, 2024) — is connected to public service values (Hildén, 2022; Van den Bulck & Moe, 2018).
