- Abstract
- This thesis examines the genres of emblem and impresa, which were the subject of considerable interest throughout the 16th, 17th, and even 18th centuries. These genres are characterized by their symbolic nature, while their form generally closely intertwines an image and text. Therefore, they belong to the more literary domains of poetics and rhetoric but also rely on elements of theology and philosophy. Regarding the latter, influences of Neoplatonism are most frequently mentioned, and to a lesser extent, Aristotelianism. However, some treatises dedicated to emblematics point to the existence of an additional philosophical approach. More precisely, they testify to the presence of modern scholasticism. In this context, the aim of the thesis is to integrate this, often overlooked, philosophical paradigm into the research on emblematics. By exploring treatises on emblems and imprese, this thesis brings additional argument to reconsider the importance of modern scholasticism in both the organisation of knowledge in the 16th and 17th centuries as well as in the newly emerging sociabilities of that time. Consequently, this study contributes to redefining the relationships between philosophy and literature at this crucial moment in their respective histories.
