Abstract
Our initial question was to know if vocal degradation, due to either a phonotraumatic or a functional dysphonia, could mediate information to the listener about personality traits commonly associated to those pathologies. It has indeed been suggested in the literature that patients suffering from a dysphonia of phonotraumatic etiology are characterized by high levels of extraversion and neuroticism while patients suffering from functional dysphonia are characterized by high levels of introversion and neuroticism. We asked judges to evaluate the personality of speakers, children and adult women, on the basis of vocal recordings. The judges’ evaluation of the speakers’ personality were in general not linked to the evaluation of their personality such as auto-reported (or reported by the mothers in the case of the children). Nevertheless, we note a negative impact of vocal degradation on the judges’ evaluations in terms of social desirability. The more the voice was degraded, the more socially undesirable traits were assigned to the speakers, such as neuroticism, introversion, close-mindedness, disagreeability, and carelessness. Following these results, we wanted to understand why vocal degradation generated negative beliefs about the speaker. We made the hypothesis that the « beauty stereotype » might be able to explain our results. According to this stereotype, positive traits are assigned to people perceived as beautiful, while negative traits are assigned to people perceived as ugly. We asked judges to evaluate speakers on the basis of vocal recordings in terms of social desirability. We asked other judges to evaluate the voice of these speakers in terms of « vocal beauty ». In accordance with our prior results, there was a negative correlation between judgments of social desirability and vocal degradation ; the more degraded the voice, the less socially desirable traits were assigned to the speakers. We also observed a negative correlation between vocal degradation and « vocal beauty ». The more degraded the voice, the less beautiful it was perceived. Finally, when the variable « vocal beauty » is controlled for, the effect of vocal degradation is no longer significant. We thus conclude that the negative effect of a vocal degradation can be explained by the contribution of vocal degradation to the perception of vocal beauty. The clinical and ethical implications of our results are discussed.
