Abstract
By varying the content of a single alloying element-manganese-in a 0.1 wt.% C steel, it has been shown that a self-quenching, ductile `dual' phase steel can be realised at room temperature. This good ductility is realized by both varying the Mn content to increase the hardenability of the steel and by decreasing the final grain size by several thermal cycles, consisting of heating into the austenitic region followed by water quenching. These cycles are then finally followed by heating into the two phase ( alpha + gamma ) region and air quenching.
