The prevention of first-fall in elderly adults is a major issue to preserve their physical and social activities. In order to identify subjects at risk among the aged population, we evaluated the body weight transfer from one leg to the other during walking, i.e. the step-to-step transition phase, with a force sensor instrumented treadmill. We first developed a methodological tool and were then able to highlight differences between young and elderly adults as well as among the aged population. For some subjects, the transition is less anticipated, less coordinated and called “passive”. Our results also show that the kinetic modifications are correlated with concomitant kinematic changes and poorer results on static balance tests. The passive transition could be a sign of functional decline of systems controlling static and walking balance and is a promising clinical indicator of first fall risk.
