Abstract
(en) In his report reviewing the academic year 1948-1949, Soubigou, the Vice-Rector of the Facultés Catholiques de l’Ouest, regrets the early disappearance of the new periodical Recherches et travaux due to financial difficulties (Angers, 1946-1948). He indeed argues that it "would have been the ideal body to demonstrate their [the university professors] knowledge". This article provides an analysis of the failure of this periodical by replacing it in the ecosystem of academic publication of French Catholic universities. The journal’s multidisciplinary strategy was initially seen as a tool for the professors (and the theologians) from Angers to better fit into academic networks. However, at the end of the Second World War, this strategy contradicted other religious logics. On the one hand, the university is unable to bring together theology and other disciplinary knowledges within one and only scientific journal. On the other hand, the Church is not, or no longer is, in a position to absorb the entire scholarly production of Angers. By sketching these difficulties, the article seeks to shed light on the economy of production of theology as knowledge. It also shows that a geopolitics of scholarly theology - different from that ordinarily underlying narratives of history of theology - is at work here. This geopolitics is not characterized merely but a dichotomy between academic theology and Roman regulation, nor by another dichotomy between religious knowledge and knowledge about the religious
