- (en) This paper explores fifteen testimonies by Italian opposition politicians deported in 1944 to the Flossenbürg concentration camp. Published between 1946 and 2006, these texts are both, detention chronicles and autobiographical accounts. Although different in regard to stylistic choices and the narrator’s attitude, they have several themes in common. One of those concerns the identity of Italian antifascists, which will be dealt with in this article. Considered as traitors by the German Kapos after the armistice of September 1943 and insulted as Fascists and Mussolini by the other political detainees, these men and women were caught in the middle. Beyond their struggle for survival, they had to defend their identity and resist against racism, suspicion, and prejudice.
