This work aims at examining the self-related elements involved in problematic alcohol consumption such as alcohol dependence and binge drinking. Four main questions guided this research: 1. Does the experience of emotional distress caused by the perception of self-discrepancy motivate individuals to be involved in problematic alcohol consumption? 2. Does self-consciousness influence this distress by increasing alcohol craving? 3. Do individuals with problematic alcohol consumption have difficulty regulating this distress? 4. Is there any similarity in self-related processes in alcohol dependence and binge drinking? This work highlights a pronounced sensitivity to self-discrepancy among alcohol-dependent individuals that is related to their emotion regulation strategies. Such a sensitivity is only observed in binge drinkers in the situations of experimentally induced self-failure.
