Abstract
(en) Complying with the European Water Framework Directive requires improved management at the watershed-scale to restore the ecological quality of all rivers, including the small ones. Such a management, that can also help mitigating flood events by reducing the consequences at a local scale, encompasses various approaches: river renaturation, flood protection measures, runoff reduction or even people education. Small watercourses have often undergone anthropogenic modifications without awareness of hydromorphological or environmental impacts. Therefore, they need renaturation works, but the cost of such projects is often prohibitive for their managers. The Rivialis project aims at developing a decision-support tool based on a digital twin of the river and a “small river quality index” that includes the most relevant components among existing hydromorphological, biological, chemical or catchment-related indicators. In order to reduce the costs of preliminary studies, most of these components should ideally be obtained from publicly available databases or from easily measurable data on site (UAV flight with LIDAR). In this paper, selected components of the small river quality index are applied to two reaches of the Petit-Bocq River by combining available public data and numerical simulations. The results show that although a significant part of the required components can be obtained in this way, some still need to be measured on site. The study also highlights the need of further field investigations to validate assumptions and public data quality, but the preliminary data collection allows to reduce the cost of such field work.
