- In the Book of Kings, the prophets announce the disastrous consequences of monarchs' unfaithfulness to YHWH, so that the miraculous prodigies they perform serve as a sign that confirms the authenticity of their word. However, the miracles Elisha performs in 2 R 2: 19-25 and 4: 1-6,7 do not appear to have the same function, for they have no relation to a prophetic announcement. The thesis proceeds to investigate the narrative dynamics of the Northern Kingdom account, associated with a close reading of Elisha's miracle episodes. The function of the miracle reports is then proposed from the analysis of the intrigue in the Northern kingdom account, the importance of the order in which they are arranged, and the significance for characterizing Elisha's character.
