This retrospective study deals with 17 consecutive cases of metallic intraocular foreign body extraction with primary vitrectomy and microforceps. The methods of surgical treatment in this setting are controversial. We discuss these methods, and show that the surgical principles applied in this series have allowed us to obtain functional results which compare favorably with those previously published, and a very low level of retinal complications with respect to other studies.
