Abstract
Conference Paper on the occasion of the international workshop "Boundless Grace? From the Thesaurus Ecclesiae to an Infinite Resource of Governance. An Interdisciplinary Workshop on Grace in Humanities Scholarship", organized in Bad Homburg, from 8 until 10 July 2024, by the Frankfurt research group POLY (Polycentricity and Plurality of Premodern Christianities); in association with DFG-ANR Project GRACEFUL17: Global Governance, Local Dynamics. Transnational Regimes of Grace in the Roman Dataria Apostolica (17th Century). This workshop aims to open a multidisciplinary academic discussion on grace as a performative synergy on the basis of empirical material provided by the participants. I will present my research on the power to pardon practised by the Sovereign Council of Brabant on the basis of the writings of Brabant jurisconsults in the modern period, and more particularly the use of letters of atterminatio, cessio bonorum and securitas corporis, through which the Duke could bring relief to debtors saddled with debt.
