Abstract
(en) A decision maker's choice of a certain transport mode is not only influenced by the usual transport costs, but also by other more qualitative factors. These qualitative factors are, next to transport time, the reliability, frequency of service, safety, flexibility, and the probability of no-loss. The goal of this paper is to incorporate the service quality attributes of the various transport modes in the modelling of the total logistics costs, to find out to what extent they play an influential role for these costs and whether they can be meaningfully separated from the usual operational transport costs. The paper starts by setting up a theoretical framework, which distinguish the elements in the total supply logistic chain that are external to the firms, i.e. the services which are outsourced, and those that are internal and part of the firm's activities. The external elements are taken to be the usual paid transport and handling costs, whereas the internal costs are composed of t
