Abstract
(en) [Treatments for multiple sclerosis: Updates and perspectives] The therapeutic armamentarium for treating multiple sclerosis has considerably evolved over the last decades. In addition to the first-line and safe immunomodulatory injectable drugs, we now use second-line treatments, which are twice as effective, though associated with rare but serious adverse events that require specific management procedures. By the end of 2014, two oral drugs will be reimbursed in Belgium, their efficiency being similar to that of the injectables, yet without interferon's general and local side-effects. These two drugs have raised hopes that they would improve patients' treatment adherence. As several new drugs are in the pipeline, consensus guidelines for adequate therapeutic algorithms are required, along with the development of biomarkers for individual therapeutic responses.
