- In 1495, singer and urban physician Johann von Soest presented his poem on urban governance to the city councillors of Worms, laying out the challenges, duties and responsibilities met by and required of those governing the late medieval civitas. Constructing a healthy and beautiful city, that impresses visitors and wards off enemies, is presented as one of the means to secure the city's prosperous existence. The physical structure of the city, located in furtile territory, provides personal and shared well-being. Beauty and splendour fulfill a socio-political function, bringing fame and protection. This paper investigates Soest's theory on the city as a social, political, legal and physical structure and specifically questions the role attributed to architectural patronage in acquiring the common. By setting Soest's poem against contemporary political and architectural developments in Worms, a more complete picture arises of the means to establish the common good in the late medieval city.
