- (en) This article examines Th. Mann's rewriting of the attempted rape of Joseph by Putiphar's wife (Genesis 39) in his novel ‘Joseph and His Brothers’. It is impossible to say everything about these pages and even about the relationship with the biblical text which is rather complex since it presupposes the passage through ancient interpretative traditions as well as a fresh elaboration of all the narrative material. The article considers just 3 points: (1) a brief analysis of the narrative in its biblical version, to see what accents are specific to the basic text; (2) a comparison of Mann's narrative with the biblical narrative and its commentaries, to highlight certain reworking procedures; (3) a reading of Th. Mann's novelistic rewriting, the aim of which is to see how he deploys his own reading of the facts reported in Genesis, in a kind of exploration of the paths of misfortune.
