Abstract
Frog sartorius muscles were tetanized (0.5, 2 or 8s every 0.2, 1 or 5 min) at 18°C in humid oxygen at length lo + 2mm (for which the tension Po is maximal). When force had decreased to 20% Po, the muscle was stretched six times every min by 2 mm and tetanized for 0.5s at each step. Resting force (TR) and active force (TA) is measured at each step. Active force decreased as resting force increased: ΔTA = 15.9 – 0.12ΔTR (force in % Po). ΔTA measures the recovery induced by stretch. It depends much of the intervals between the tetani, being maximal at 5 min. Duration of tetanus is less important, and the frequency of stimulation has no effect. If humid oxygen is replaced by humid nitrogen, or if the muscle is stimulated in Ringer solution, there is no restitution of force by stretch. Thus in these conditions, muscle fatigue is metabolic, and has no mechanical component.
