Experimental studies of light metal hydrides under variable pressure and temperature are reviewed with an empahsis on the methodological aspects: collecting good quality powder data, solving new structures, relating different polymorphs in an attempt to reveal phase transition mechanisms and the underlying crystal chemistry. Practical recommendations and examples are given.
