- In this chapter, I examine inter-paradigm levelling in the verbal classes of Griko and explore the triggers for this type of change. In the case of inter-paradigm levelling in Griko, probabilities of internal and external origin are nicely balanced; not only internal but also external motivations can lead to inter-paradigm levelling. I argue that endogenous forces (internal developments) seem to be active in this type of change, but -contrary to the tradition following the Neogrammarians- I claim that inter-paradigm levelling cannot be seen as a systematizing process originally triggered only by phonological operations. Productivity should also be taken into account. On the other hand, language contact enhances a change already observed in the system. I opt for a non-dichotomous view, according to which both endogenous and exogenous factors work hand in hand.
