Abstract
(en) [Parental educational level and oral health situation and the oral health condition of their children in Kinshasa, DR Congo] Objective: The aim of the present study was to examine the relation between the oral health condition and related behaviors of children in Kinshasa (DR Congo) and the educational level and oral health history of their parents – Method: A convenience sample of children attending five dental clinics in public and private hospitals in Kinshasa was examined between April 2007 and January 2008. An ad hoc questionnaire was completed for each child, after having obtained an informed consent from the parents or accompanying person. The collected data were analysed using SPSS (version 18.0). Chi-square tests and Mantzel-Haenszel odd’s ratio’s (OR) were calculated. The significance level was set at P<0.05 – Results: From the 736 children that consulted in that period, 710 children were included in the sample (47.6% boys, 52.4% girls) with a mean age of 9.3 years (+/3.6). In the primary dentition, 47.7% of the children was free of caries; in the permanent dentition this was the case for 60.9%. The highest educational level reached by a majority of fathers (65.0%) was postsecondary education; this was only for 26.6% of the mothers the case. In addition, 38.8% of fathers reported dental caries experience whereas this was 56.0% for mothers. The educational level of the parents showed no association with the oral health condition of their children, in neither dentition (P = 0.89 and 0.07 respectively for primary and permanent dentition for fathers; P = 0.30 and 0.28 for mothers). No association was seen between the educational level of the parents and the frequency of tooth brushing of the children (P = 0.71 for fathers and 0.20 for mothers), neither between the oral health history of the parents an the oral health condition of their children (OR = 0.68; 95% CI 0.42:1.09 for fathers and OR = 0.74; 95% CI 0.46:1.08 for mothers) – Conclusion: This study demonstrated the complexity of an analysis of the association between the educational level of parents, their oral health history and the oral health condition of their children. In order to gain a deeper insight, it is suggested that additional studies are undertaken with a larger sample
