Abstract
In this paper we address the calculation of performance characteristics of turbo-codes. The aim is to provide a method that has a low complexity and that enables the analysis of a wide variety of turbo-coded schemes, with in mind the possibility of using it as an optimization criterion in an adaptive system. The proposed method enables the determination of the error-free decoding threshold and of the number of iterations to achieve error-free decoding. Its complexity is far lower than that of existing methods and it offers an accuracy close to that of EXIT charts.
