Abstract
Many neuropsychiatric disorders can be linked to changes in cortical excitability that might be present before the appearance of cognitive symptoms. Therefore, there is a need for a diagnostic tool that would allow to identify such pathologic changes at the pre-clinical stages. This could be accomplished using the combination of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electroencephalography. TMS-evoked potentials (TEPs) can provide information about the functional state of the stimulated brain network, however, their use as clinical biomarkers is still hindered by their difficult interpretation. The aim of this dissertation was to investigate the significance of TEPs in the primary motor cortex and the angular gyrus while focusing on their relation to inhibitory neurotransmission. Novel methods, such as topographic analysis, were implemented to characterize TEP profiles and to identify the components that may serve as non-invasive biomarkers of local cortical excitability.
