Abstract
This paper examines the urban development of Athens under Roman rule between the 2nd century BC and the 2nd century AD, with special attention to the period spanning from Sulla’s destruction of the city center to Hadrian’s reign. The focus is on a selection of landmarks that allow for a comprehensive approach to the instrumental methods and resources that were used to shape a Roman identity within the Greek polis, in an effort to connect the glorious Classical past with a new cityscape adhering to the standards of Rome. Using a combined investigation of archaeological, historical, and epigraphical evidence, we analyze the main threads of the imperial discourse; namely, the fitting implementation of new buildings in a preexisting urban framework, the refurbishment of earlier buildings to the Roman standards, the continuation of the Hellenistic practice of euergetism, and the ubiquity of symbolic references to the Roman rulers.
